16-year-old arrested; planned shooting with explosives at Berkeley High, police say

BERKELEY, Calif. - A 16-year-old boy was arrested after recruiting others to take part in a mass faculty capturing that could have included a bombing at Berkeley Excessive Faculty, police say. 

The teenager was arrested Monday, when he turned himself in to police, Berkeley Police Department stated in a press launch. Monday was Memorial Day and there was no school that day. 

The boy was arrested on suspicion of possessing destructive device materials and threatening to commit against the law which will result in loss of life or nice bodily harm.

Police stated they received a tip on Saturday that the boy was recruiting others in plans of a shooting that included explosives. Following the tip, police obtained and executed a search warrant for a residence. 

Police did not say if the teenager was a pupil at Berkeley Excessive Faculty.

Upon executing the search warrant, police stated they discovered components to explosives and assault rifles, a number of knives, and digital objects that could be used to create extra weapons. 

At that point, a warrant was obtained for the teen's arrest.

"School security remains a high priority for the department," police said in a press release. 

Details on whom the teenager was attempting to recruit were not disclosed. Police stated this case stays underneath investigation. 

Berkeley Unified Supt. Brent Stephens informed the school's group that the district was in shut contact with police throughout this investigation. 

After police confiscated the teen's weapon parts, the district relied on police expertise to evaluate any potential ongoing risk to its colleges. The district communicated with police on the scholar's whereabouts. 

"As added precautions during this period, we alerted our administrative and safety staff about this investigation and, as is our commonplace apply, maintained shut contact with our BPD College Resource Officer on the Berkeley Excessive College campus," Stephens wrote. "All through the investigation period, we had been assured that this individual did not pose a direct threat to the Berkeley Excessive College neighborhood."

The district is conducting their own investigation on this matter. 

The district could pursue disciplinary action towards the coed. 

In addition, a town corridor assembly titled: 'Tips on how to Discuss to Kids About Faculty Violence' offered by Alameda County Workplace of Schooling is scheduled for Wednesday at 6 p.m.
