SACRAMENTO, Calif. >> A suspect on the run since a mass capturing left six people dead throughout an alleged gang dispute in California’s capital city final month has been arrested in Las Vegas, authorities mentioned.
Investigators believe Mtula Payton was one of many alleged gang members who opened fire in downtown Sacramento on April 3. He was taken into custody at an condo complex, the Sacramento Police Division mentioned in an announcement Saturday night time.
“Las Vegas Metro Police Department worked with our detectives for weeks in an effort to locate Payton,” the statement said.
It wasn’t identified Sunday if Payton has an attorney who might communicate on his behalf.
Payton and two others, brothers Smiley Martin and Dandrae Martin, have been charged this month with homicide in the slayings, in addition to weapons offenses.
Investigators supplied no motive but mentioned in courtroom paperwork that Smiley Martin and his companions recorded an online video hours earlier than the shooting, flashing weapons and speaking trash from a location in rival gang territory. In it, they state their plans to move to the downtown space with the intent of opening fire.
Three males alleged to be gang members and three women who had been innocent bystanders died in the shootout that occurred as patrons of bars and nightclubs emptied out onto downtown streets. A dozen extra individuals were wounded.
The Martin brothers, who had been among the many wounded, remain jailed. Attorneys for the brothers have but to touch upon their charging.
Payton, who police say is a member of a rival gang, was being held in a Nevada jail pending transport back to California.
