Arlington police stated Duff Elementary College was placed on lockdown for a time Thursday after a mother or father with a concealed weapon had his gun unintentionally go off, hitting the father or mother in the leg.

ARLINGTON, Texas - Arlington police mentioned Duff Elementary College was placed on lockdown for a time Thursday after a parent with a concealed weapon had his gun accidentally go off, hitting the father or mother within the leg.

The varsity had early release and college students had been released at the planned time of 12:10 p.m.

In line with police, the mother or father, recognized as 55-year-old Anthony White, dropped his gun and unintentionally shot himself. His injury was not serious.

The school district stated White was contained in the building, close to the lobby area, and not in the hallway close to students when the gun went off.

Police and school officers said there was no menace made and the mother or father did not have "malicious intent."

No college students or staff have been injured. The mum or dad was taken to an area hospital after being shot in the leg. 

Arlington Police Chief Al Jones mentioned after White was released from the hospital, he was arrested and charged with illegal carrying of a weapon in prohibited locations and discharge of a firearm in sure municipalities.

In the two days because the Uvalde mass faculty shooting, there have been five cases in North Texas related to weapons brought to schools or threats made.

Arlington mother and father said their minds immediately thought of the worst when they have been notified.

No mum or dad ever needs there to be a reason for them to get a textual content message saying their child's school is on lockdown.

But since this week's lethal capturing at Robb Elementary in Uvalde, they can not assist but suppose the worst when they do.

"Once I received the text message, I was like, ‘Oh my God, something is going to occur.’ I used to be shocked," mum or dad Karima Rasheed mentioned.

While most occasions, lockdowns are only drills students have to take part in, Rasheed's son, Rami, mentioned that understanding what occurred earlier this week made this lockdown completely different. 

"I started seeing my classmates beginning to cry and our instructor received a notification on their phone saying someone was in the constructing," he stated.

Mitchell lives throughout the street from Duff Elementary. His daughters go to a different Arlington school. 

"I’m terrified, completely terrified. I’ve acquired twin six-year-olds that go to a special Arlington school and every time I hear there's a lockdown or a school shooting, my coronary heart jumps into my throat," he mentioned.

Rasheed said Thursday was the commencement day for 6th grade students at Duff Elementary.

While driving her son to school in the morning, she had a chat with him about Uvalde and what to do if something ever happened at his college.

"If something occurred, you’ve received to run anyplace that’s protected and hide," she advised her child.

Whereas some say the incident in Uvalde is just too recent to talk politics, Mitchell mentioned something must be done now. 

"They wish to talk about it, they wish to marketing campaign on it, they need to fundraiser on it, however they don’t wish to truly move any laws and do something," he added.
