Talking within the dugout of the Nice American Ballpark in Cincinnati, Ohio, Kapler stated, "I do not plan on popping out for the anthem going forward until I feel higher about the path of our country."

Later, Kapler wrote about his disillusionment with what he called "the dearth of supply of the promise of what our nationwide anthem represents."
"I'm not okay with the state of this country. I wish I hadn't let my discomfort compromise my integrity. I wish that I may have demonstrated what I discovered from my dad, that whenever you're dissatisfied together with your nation, you let it be identified by means of protest. The home of the brave ought to encourage this."
