Apple has discontinued the iPod, 20 years after it was released.

The US tech giant said its iconic music participant has been changed by other units, making the iPod redundant.

Greg Joswiak, Apple's senior vice-president of worldwide advertising and marketing, stated: "At the moment, the spirit of iPod lives on.

"We have built-in an incredible music experience throughout all of our products, from the iPhone to the Apple Watch to HomePod mini, and across Mac, iPad, and Apple TV.

"And Apple Music delivers industry-leading sound quality with support for spatial audio - there's no better option to enjoy, uncover, and experience music."

In October 2001, Steve Jobs debuted the unique iPod and it was the first MP3 participant that would hold 1,000 songs and had a 10-hour battery life.

"With iPod, Apple has invented a complete new class of digital music participant that lets you put your whole music assortment in your pocket and listen to it wherever you go," he stated at the time.

"With iPod, listening to music won't ever be the same again."

Similar MP3 gamers released by Microsoft and Sony didn't have the identical success as the iPod.

Apple has released five variations of its music participant - the Classic, Contact, Shuffle, Mini and Nano.

The company has been slowly killing its iPod vary in recent times, with cell phone technology enabling clients to take heed to music companies on their telephones.

In 2014, the basic click wheel mannequin was discontinued, and the Shuffle and Nano were killed off three years later.
